New Books

Two new books have been published by Very Rev John J Silke and Moira Hughes

Raphoe Miscellany 1 & From Courleigh to Creeslough

In Raphoe Miscellany I the Raphoe Diocesan Archive offer to the public a mélange of material from archival and other sources, ranging from early times to the present.  The work provides a vivid insight into the life of the ancient diocese.  Among matters treated of are Tír Conaill, 734-1250; the first bishops of Raphoe; Scarriffhollis 1650, etc.

From Courleigh to Creeslough tells the remarkable story how JJ Silke who came to Donegal from Paulstown, Co Kilkenny, based at Creeslough, transformed a lowly graded Irish Seed Potato into an international renowned delicacy.  Among his signal achievements were the growing of the world’s record yield (over 35 tons per statute acre) in 1929 and the winning of the Derby Gold Medal in 1944, the first and only Irishman to do so.

Each book costs €10 available at Bishop’s House (074 9121208) and Diocesan Archive (074 9161109; email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ), Ards Friary Bookshop and other good book outlets in Letterkenny.

The above two books were launched by Bishop Philip Boyce on 12.07.2012 at the Raphoe Diocesan Archive.
